Print media facing a long-term threat

Sir, Turbulent economic conditions serving to raise newspaper circulation ("Crisis lifts newspapers amid long-term circulation decline", 6/7 December) come as no surprise as the man on the street feels the effects of the fallout from financial markets. At times of unease the appetite for news escalates and consumption increases across print and online media.

As the economic outlook worsens this may well continue.

Recent cover price rises have broadly shown there is still a group of consumers where the desire for print media remains. While demand for sources of information is diversifying, the printed word clearly plays an important role in how news is consumed. Print still has its place as an important source of news. However, with the rise in popularity of new sources of information, the challenge for print media is much more long-term and providers should beware biting the hand that feeds them.
